FULBRIGHT TEA - TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

Call for applications for international secondary school teachers of

English, Science and Social Studies

Time of the program:

Cohort I: Six weeks beginning in late January 2019

Cohort II: Six weeks beginning in late September 2019

Fulbright TEA is a worldwide program funded by the U.S. State Department and implemented by IREX (International Research and Exchanges Board). Approximately 170 international teachers of English, science and social studies will be selected to participate in two cohorts of this six-week professional development training at a U.S. university including academic coursework, methodology, leadership training, instructional technology seminars, and a practicum in a U.S. secondary school.

Program Overview:

The Fulbright TEA program is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Programs at the U.S. State Department and implemented by IREX (International Research &Exchanges Board).

The program will consist of academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, curriculum development, lesson planning, teaching strategies, and instructional technology training. The program will also include a practicum of at least 40 hours with a U.S. partner teacher in a U.S. secondary school near the host university to actively engage participants in the U.S. classroom environment. Cultural enrichment, mentoring, and support will be provided to participants throughout the program.

TEA program has a small alumni group of teachers in Estonia. Please contact the U.S. Embassy Tallinn if you would like to learn more from the alumni. 

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

  • Applicants must be current secondary-level, full-time teachers of English, math, science, or social studies, including special education teachers in those subjects at institutions serving primarily a local population.
  • Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent, and have completed at least five years of classroom teaching experience by the start of the program.
  • Most competitive applicants will have shown evidence of leadership in their school or region. 
  • Teachers working in under-resourced and remote communities and teachers of English ACCESS Microscholarship program will be given higher priority.
  • Applicants must reside in the country of citizenship at the time of application. Applicants who have recently traveled to the U.S. for exchange programs such as SUSI or IVLP, or to other Western countries for professional development for an extensive training course will be given lower priority.
  • Not eligible: Educational administrators and school leaders who do not teach at least 50% of their time, full-time teacher trainers, university faculty, Ministry of Education officials, private English tutors and teachers from schools primarily serving expatriates.
  • English Language Testing: This is an academic program and all candidates nominated for the program must have sufficient oral and written English language skills, and the selected applicants must take the TOEFL, or an equivalent test.  Funds to cover testing fees for the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT), as well as in-country travel cost to the testing site and to attend the pre-departure orientation will be reimbursed. Free testing vouchers will be given to the finalists of this competition to take TOEFL (iBT) at EducationUSA Centers at Tallinn University of Technology or at Tartu University Library during the period of April – May 2018.
  • Dependents: Dependents are not permitted to accompany participants on this six-week program.

  Travel and Funding:  IREX will provide all teachers with an international airline ticket; reimbursement will be provided for round-trip travel expenses between home city and the point of departure for the U.S. 

All accommodation, meals and program related travel costs in the U.S. will be covered.

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please answer all questions as fully as possible, and make sure that scores (if available), institutional support forms, recommendations and other required documents must be included in the application package
  • Confirmation of Selection:  IREX will make an effort to provide the accepted list of nominees by September 1, 2018.
